St. Ignace, Mich., on the shores of Lake Huron is another hot spot you won’t want to miss if you’re a fan of history. This city’s history begins after the continental glaciation when the glaciers moved in a southwesterly direction that gouged, smoothed and upgraded St. Ignace’s unique landforms and water courses.
As one of the oldest continuously occupied communities in the United States, St. Ignace is also one of the oldest Native American tribal gathering sites in Michigan and the Midwest. This makes the city home to annual celebrations such as the Native American Festival, Heritage Days and Rendezvous Pow Wow. You’ll also find shops such as Lone Wolf Gifts where you can learn about native history and traditions.
These dunes have been part of the park system since 1970 and are one of America’s most beautiful landscapes, featuring sweeping vistas, forested wilderness islands, miles of hiking trails and freshwater beaches.
